Commercial refrigerators are an essential item for any food service location, storing your food and ingredients at the proper temperature and keeping everything fresh and safe. So, mastering the tips to ensure your refrigeration equipment runs on the right track is a survival skill in any commercial kitchen. In this blog, we’ve listed 5 common issues that restaurants probably encounter with their refrigerators and we'll guide you through how to troubleshoot them end-to-end.
A blank thermostat display is a significant issue that often leads to food spoilage and a total loss of temperature control. If the screen is dark, the refrigerator isn't communicating. Don't assume the board is dead yet; follow these troubleshooting steps to identify the root cause:
Power Output: Check whether the power supply has power output. If there is no output, the power supply unit is likely burnt out and needs to be replaced.
Power Cord Condition: Inspect the power cord for any physical damage or loose connections. Kitchen heat and movement can make cords brittle; if it is not in good condition, change the power cord.
Main Switch: Verify whether the main power switch is functioning normally. If the switch is faulty, it will prevent electricity from reaching the display; replace the main switch if necessary.
Thermostat Operation: If power is reaching the unit but the display remains blank, check whether the thermostat itself is in good running order. If it has failed internally, you will need to change the thermostat.
A commercial refrigerator that stops cooling is one of the most serious issues in foodservice. Fresh ingredients rely on stable temperature control, and even a short failure can lead to spoilage and financial loss. If your unit is running but not cooling properly, follow these steps to find out the reasons.
Check the Thermostat Function: A faulty thermostat may fail to send the signal to start the cooling cycle. If temperature settings don’t respond or readings are inaccurate, replacing the thermostat is often the quickest fix.
Inspect Condenser & Evaporator Fans: Evaporator fans play a critical role in circulating cold air throughout the cabinet. If a fan stops running, airflow is interrupted and cooling performance drops immediately. Replace any condenser or evaporator fan that is not operating correctly.
Check for Refrigerant Leak: If all refrigerant has leaked out, the system will not cool at all. Locate the leak point, repair it properly by welding, and recharge refrigerant according to the manufacturer’s specifications.
Check Compressor Operation: The compressor is the engine of the entire refrigeration system. If it is not operating properly and all other components are functioning normally, the compressor will need to be replaced.
When the refrigerator cools but not enough, it means that there is something wrong with your unit. The reasons tend to be related to airflow, environment, or maintenance.
Ensure Proper Ventilation Space: Upright refrigerators need adequate clearance, usually more than 30 cm, for heat dissipation. For the undercounter unit, make sure there is more than 30 cm of space in front of the control panel. Insufficient space around the unit traps heat and impacts cooling performance.
Check Ambient Temperature & Humidity: Most commercial refrigerators are designed to operate in environments up to 43°C, with humidity 80% below. Excessive heat or humidity forces the system to work harder and reduces efficiency.
Clean the Condenser & Dust filter: Dust buildup on the condenser restricts heat exchange. Cleaning the filter monthly significantly improves cooling performance.
Check Door Seals & Closing Habits: Worn door gaskets or frequent door opening cause warm air infiltration, leading to frost buildup and poor cooling. Replace damaged seals and cultivate the habits of door openings.
Inspect Internal Airflow: Overloading shelves or blocking air vents prevents cold air from circulating evenly. Keep at least 10 cm of clearance around air outlets.
Unusual or weird noises are often early warning signs of issues with mechanical failure or poor installation. When you hear the noise in the freezer or chiller behind the house, it's time to take action before a full breakdown occurs.
Check Unit Leveling & Stability: An uneven floor or a shaky installation causes vibrations and "rattling." Check the leveling feet to ensure the unit is perfectly balanced and grounded.
Inspect Fan Blades and Motor Mounts: Loose motor mounts or debris in the fan housing can cause a grinding or buzzing sound. Tighten any loose components and clear out any foreign objects that might be obstructing the blades.
Check the Compressor: If the compressor is unusually loud (excessive humming or knocking), clean the condenser coils first. Persistent noise often points to internal mechanical wear or a failing compressor that may need to call professionals for help.
If the compressor fails, your refrigerator is basically just a normal cabinet, and it won't cool at all. Here’s how to diagnose the heart of your cooling system:
Check the Voltage Supply: An unstable or incorrect voltage can prevent the compressor from "kicking in." Confirm that the electrical supply matches the equipment’s specific power requirements.
Test the Thermostat Signal: If the thermostat is faulty, it won't "call for cooling," meaning it fails to send the start signal to the compressor. If the signal is dead, the thermostat needs to be replaced.
Inspect the Overload Protector: If the compressor is overheating frequently, the overload protector will "trip" and shut the system down to prevent a fire. If the protector itself has failed, or if the compressor keeps tripping it, you've got a serious issue.
Confirm Compressor Failure: If every other component tests fine but the unit still won't start, the compressor is likely defective. At this stage, it’s a major repair that must be handled by a professional service.
